Mayhem!!! Complete mayhem!! :)
I started off with my 5m Tomahawk sail and Hifly, expecting a mad speed
session, but on the first run I soon worked out that 5m was WAY too big, so
quickly came back in and changed down to a very flatly rigged 4.5m and my
wave board. if I had a 400cm mast I would have rigged my 3.4m
Once again, back into the fray. I was still maxed out and at times
completely and utterly overpowered, but it was fun. Each run had a variety
of conditions, from nicely powered up flat water in the bay, to massive
chop and massively overpowered when I was in line with the Leri, to
completely maxed out stupidly fast flat water conditions once the other
side of the Leri....
First it was get going in the flat water and build up to speed, before
heading upwind over the chop with a few nice chop hops in front of the
Leri, then time to scare myself....
The mad speed runs over not particularly well known waters (and therefore
unknown sandbanks) were REALLY scary. At times I went much faster than I've
ever been before (except maybe for the one time I had a go on a Sputnik). I
would just bear away as the water flattened off and go for it until I
reached maximum speed, at which point there was very little I could do
except hang on. Even slowing down again was a problem and it took all my
strength to carve the board upwind to slow myself down. I did go for the
odd crazy gybe at that speed, but with little success.
Then it would be back the other way at maximum speed before slowing down a
bit for the choppy bit. I did hit the chop at full speed at one point, but
just went bouncing off all over the place out of control with spray flying
in all directions until a rail caught and that was the end of that run!!
Going back this way I was able to carve around on some of the bigger bits
of chop, before hitting the flat water in the bay and heading upwind to
where I started from... Perfect.
The wind was just crazy though, and although most of the time I was able to
just about hang on, there were some really viscous gusts that would just
come out of nowhere. Some would just completely flatten me, literally
slamming the rig down on my head, but if that wasn't scary enough, the
gusts that decided to lift you out the water were worse. On a number of
occasions I was happily blasting along gritting my teeth, when a huge gust
would hit with ridiculous force and just lift me and my kit out of the
water, one in particular must have lifted me about 10 feet in the air and
carried me quite a way downwind. There was just nothing I could do about
it, the wind literally picked me up!!
What a mad session.. Where was everybody else??
